Recycled paper & image trapping

Joanne Gardner tracks down the solutions to your print problems

Q Could you please tell me where I can get hold of a list of paper grades that have recycled content.
Steve Gould
Via email

A I believe PrintWeek ran a Buyers’ Guide in the 27 March issue with a comprehensive guide to recycled grades (even if I do say so myself). There are about 150 in the list and they all vary in terms of their recycled content. Demand has obviously increased a great deal of late and now we’re beginning to see paper with more than 50% recycled content. Since you’re writing from a newspaper publisher I assume you are looking for recycled newsprint, in which case UPM’s News (www2.upm-kymmene.com), matt newsprint for coldset and heatset web offset in 40-52gsm, might be what you’re after. Another one to try is Kent-based Aylesford Newsprint (01622 796000, info@aylesford-newsprint.co.uk; www.aylesford-newsprint.co.uk), which manufactures Renaissance 100% recycled newsprint. I’ll also send you a copy of the Buyers’ Guide recycled paper list, because that’s the kind of person I am.

Q I run a large-format screen printshop in Slovakia and am trying to locate software that will help to make trapping jobs easier as we do it all manually in llustrator, Quark and Photoshop at the moment. It would preferably work well with a Harlequin RIP. Another question, what is considered the industry standard for trapping?
Name and address supplied

A Two questions in one eh? Sneaky. I would appreciate a correction on this if it is wrong but I believe the industry standard overlap (trapping) that should be allowed for (so that a white gap doesn’t appear between two images when variations inevitably occur in registration) is 0.014mm. As for the software, LucidDream Software has a program called I-Trap Auto (www.trapping.org), which adds automatic in-rip trapping to your workflow. Apparently it allows traps needed for larger registration tolerance (so good for large format) and works well with Harlequin RIP. There’s a discount during the Drupa season so it’d be worth a look on the website.
