Island's paper gets tabloid format makeover after 120 years

Newbury Weekly News is to print the Isle of Wight County Press' new tabloid format paper after more than 120 years as a broadsheet.

The Berkshire-based printer will produce the island's weekly in four parts: an 88pp tabloid news section; a classified section; a 48pp property section; and a 24pp weekender section.

The first edition included a fashion and a schools section, taking the overall pagination to 196pp.

Robin Freeman, managing director of the Isle of Wight County Press, said: "The research carried out at the end of last year showed that Islanders preferred the smaller, tabloid format, so for the past nine months we have been carefully planning the change.

"It has been enthusiastically welcomed by readers and advertisers."

The Isle of Wight County Press currently has a print run of 38,000. The newspaper claims a readership of up to 92% of the island.
